FREE PUBLIC EVENT: CSCA’s Edmonton chapter presents a lecture with Arnold E. Sikkema (CSCA Past-President & current Executive Director; Professor of Physics, Trinity Western University).
SCIENCE AS A BARRIER TO THE GOSPEL? NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES
Christians often encounter scientific questions and challenges from both inside and outside the church. Our youth cite the church’s stance on science as one reason for leaving, and problematic responses are routinely provided in the context of apologetics and evangelism. This talk will discuss several myths regarding science that are prevalent in both the church and the wider culture and suggest ways to answer scientific objections to the faith. Knowing more about the depth and nuances of Christian views on science can help prevent science from being a barrier to the gospel.
Arnold E. Sikkema is a theoretical physicist with a background in general relativity and condensed matter theory. His current research interests are in theoretical biophysics and in the Christian philosophy of science, particularly in the relationship between physics and biology. Arnold has been involved in Christian higher education since 1997 and joined the executive council of the CSCA in 2011. He served as the President of the CSCA from 2013 to 2016 and became its Executive Director in November 2018. He also leads the Vancouver chapter of the CSCA. Originally from Ontario, he and his wife Valerie (a professional horticulturist) have been happy to call BC home since 1991, except for a sojourn in the USA from 1997 to 2005. They have three adult children, all of whom have studied at TWU.
